A few other things I read/watched...
Many of the looters are not from NO, and specifically came there hoping to take advantage of the situation.
Many of the people who stayed ALSO stayed hoping to take advantage of the situation.
And I agree with Chaser.. 20,00 people are witnessing a rape, and NONE of them can prevent it?
It's really almost unbelievable.
I also don't blame the politicians... they've never seen devistation like this before.. how can you prepare a plan for something you can only imagine? Hell, even many military types have said this is worse then anything they've ever seen before.
They keep talking about rebuilding, but I can't imagine how practical that is.. you have land that's sunk so low in the last 100 years that it is below sea level, and they've said all the flooded building will need to be demolished, and then rebuilt from scratch because of the contaminated water.. and that's 80% of friggin New Orleans!
Seems to me it's much mor epractical to salvage the 20% that's salvagable, write off the rest,
and start building a little further north, where you already have stable land and where constuction can begins much sooner.
Winter is coming up VERY fast, and there are 1000s that will need shelter, not just in NO, but also in the surrounding communities.
Any politician who voices that opinion is immediately fed to the jackals, but I'd really like to hear what the core of engineers think independantly of the historical/patriotic "we can rebuild" ideologies.
What makes the most sense, speed and cost wise?
